INTERACTIVE WALL – RIDEAU CENTER

An overview of the Interactive Wall made with MASSIVART:

Introduction

Embarking on the journey to implement four interactive cameras for a 360-degree experience at the Rideau Center Shopping Mall was a challenge that demanded both creativity and technical finesse.

The Challenge of Integration: Max/MSP and TouchDesigner

Implementing interactive cameras with only one computer is no easy feat, and doing so with Max/MSP added an extra layer of complexity. Max/MSP’s versatility, however, proved to be an asset, allowing for a unique blend of creativity and functionality. TouchDesigner, known for its real-time interactive multimedia content creation, played a pivotal role in shaping the visual scene.

Tools of the Trade: Kinect Interactive Cameras and Networking Tricks

The heart of the interactive experience lay in the Kinect cameras. These devices not only captured movements but also became the bridge between the physical and virtual realms. Networking tricks were employed to seamlessly pass tracking data into the real-time visual scene, creating a fluid and immersive user experience.

The 360-Degree Experience: A Night of Installation

One of the standout moments of the project was the installation night. In a race against time, LED screens and other hardware were integrated into the setup in a single night—8 hours of intense collaboration and technical wizardry. This pivotal moment marked the transformation of the concept into a tangible, immersive reality.

On-Site Maintenance: Nurturing the Experience

The commitment did not end with the installation. Maintaining the system on-site throughout its duration at the Rideau Center Shopping Mall was a responsibility that required vigilance and technical prowess. Daily check-ins ensured that the 360-degree experience continued to captivate and engage visitors.

Conclusion: Blurring Boundaries Between Art and Technology

In the intersection of Max/MSP, TouchDesigner, Kinect cameras, and networking ingenuity, a unique and captivating experience was born. This project stands as a testament to the possibilities that emerge when creativity meets technology. Beyond the technicalities, it reflects the seamless integration of art and innovation, offering visitors a journey into the immersive realms of interactive visual storytelling.
